Introduction
Adop Spot -  4 week hackathon

AdoptSpot is a collaborative hackathon project designed to simplify and streamline the pet adoption process by connecting potential pet owners with animal shelters through a user-friendly platform. Completed in a four-week sprint, I served as the Design Lead, guiding a diverse team of five designers across multiple time zones. Motivated by the inefficiencies and fragmentation in current adoption systems, our goal was to create an intuitive experience that makes it easier for people to find their ideal pets while helping shelters place animals in loving homes.

Problem Statement
Redefining the Pet Adoption Journey.

We set out to solve the fragmented and frustrating pet adoption experience by designing a seamless, centralized platform that supports both under-resourced shelters and prospective adopters. The goal was to streamline processes, improve matching, and reduce the burden on shelters.

Goal
  • Simplify Adoption: Make pet adoption easy and intuitive for users.

  • Boost Adoptions: Help more pets find homes quickly.

  • Support Shelters: Reduce admin work with efficient tools.

  • Smart Matching: Utilize filters and profiles to pair pets with the ideal owners.

  • Measure Success: Track adoptions, user engagement, and feedback.

Ideation
  • Conducted collaborative brainstorming sessions using FigJam, developed user personas and journey maps, and explored design ideas through sketching and wireframing with a focus on simplicity and intuitive navigation.

  • Prioritized key features such as advanced search filters, detailed pet profiles, and a streamlined application process, iterating based on team feedback and early user testing.

Implementation
  • Initiated the design process with wireframes to establish the platform’s information architecture and user flow, organizing design sprints to refine these based on user feedback.

  • Created interactive prototypes in Figma, enabling realistic user interactions and iterative testing to enhance usability and visual appeal.

  • Ensured collaborative team efforts by assigning each designer to different platform sections and conducting regular reviews to integrate feedback and make necessary adjustments.

  • Focused on building a clean, easy-to-navigate interface with clear call-to-actions and informative content to improve user engagement.

Challenges I Faced
  • Coordinated a team across time zones and skill levels through clear communication and regular check-ins.

  • Managed tight timelines by prioritizing tasks and using agile methodologies.

  • Emphasized user-centered design and iterative prototyping.

  • Collaborated closely with stakeholders to adapt to changing needs.

  • Learned the importance of assertiveness and effective team communication.

  • Identified the value of data analysis to inform future design decisions.

Conclusion

The Streamlined Pet Adoption platform has the potential to significantly improve the pet adoption experience for both adopters and shelters. Plans include expanding the platform to support more shelters and adding additional features based on user feedback and data analysis.
